Fin size and rider weight: what actually changes with a bigger rider

A heavier rider generally needs more fin area to hold the same wave; a lighter rider needs less, or the board feels stiff and hard to turn. Board weight and tail width shift that too, so rider weight is one input, not the whole answer.
Named against real riders
Testing eight hybrid twin fins named a rider weight or size context for each pick, at a reference rider of 96 kilograms and 6'2:
- The Christenson honeycomb hybrid keel (204 grams, the lightest of the eight, 5 degree cant) was matched to a smaller rider or small to medium conditions for a heavier rider.
- The Captain Fin Co Mikey February (309 grams, the second heaviest, largest surface area at 25.99 square inches, 5 degree cant) was matched to a wider tail, a heavier board, or a heavier rider.
- The NVS Ono keel (260 grams, 6.5 degree cant, a smaller surface area than most of the others in the lineup) suited a small to medium rider, or a larger rider on bigger days.
- The A Mano Surf performance keel (265 grams, about 22 square inches) was named as a good fin for an average-sized rider, smaller than the reference rider, after the reviewer noted that a lot of surfers are smaller than his own 96 kilograms.
- The Shapers Album MK (267 grams, 22.39 square inches) suited a smaller to medium rider or reasonable-sized waves, prioritizing control over outright speed.
- The Soar Australia G10 half keel (311 grams, the heaviest of the eight, 23.22 square inches) was called right for a bigger rider.
The same pattern on a quad-based groveler
On a wide, oversized groveler board built as a quad, the reviewer, at 95 kilograms, ran the large size of a Rob Machado keel set, while a friend at about 68 kilograms ran the medium size on the same board model and rated it highly. The advice that followed: match fin size to your own weight and height first, then adjust for whether your particular board is sized larger or smaller than standard for your height.
Board size interacts with rider weight
An oversized board for the rider's height and weight can carry a smaller fin further into bigger waves than an undersized board can, because there is more board underfoot doing the work. Conversely, an undersized board for the rider will need to keep more fin area for longer as waves get bigger, since there is less volume and rail line to fall back on. This means the same rider can want two different fin sizes in two boards of the same model, depending on which size of that model they chose.
A starting point, not a rule
None of this replaces the tail-shape and fin-box read covered on keels or upright twin fins. Rider weight shifts which end of a fin's size range to start at; the board's own outline and box position still decide which category, upright, half keel or keel, to start from.
