Keel or upright twin fins? How to tell which your board wants

A keel fin suits a wide swallow tail and wants drive over pivot. An upright fin suits a narrower, more pulled-in tail and wants pivot over drive. Most boards in the middle want a half keel. The board tells you which one, not a rule of thumb alone.

Read the tail first

A short, wide fish with a swallow tail and glassed-in or wide-spaced fin boxes wants a keel. This is the original Steve Lis fish layout: wide apart fins, lots of surface area, built for drive down the line rather than sharp turns. A narrower, more pulled-in swallowtail, or a diamond or rounded pin tail, wants less fin, moving toward an upright or half keel. On a performance-oriented twin with a pulled-in tail and deep concave, an upright can feel squirrely, which is when a trailer fin or a half keel like the Jim Banks Hooker earns its place.

How far apart the fin boxes sit, and how far forward, changes what the board needs. As a rule of thumb from testing dozens of setups: the closer together the fins sit, the less fin area is needed; fins set further forward generally want more upright fins, and fins set further back and wider apart generally want more keel. A board with channels needs less fin than the same board without channels, because the channels behave like part of a fin.

When the "wrong" fin surprises you

Testing two versions of the same hybrid keel across three different twin fin boards showed this is not always predictable from the tail shape alone. On a six-foot fish with thin, knifey rails and small channels cut into the tail, a set of Rob Machado hybrid keels felt like too much fin, gripping so hard it was hard to find a takeoff rhythm, even though the board's own shaper had said it preferred upright fins. On a heavier, thicker-railed six-foot fish, the same keel felt right, no sliding out even in chest-high waves. The lesson from that test: ask the shaper what a specific board wants before assuming from the outline alone, and expect a board with unusually thin rails or aggressive channels to behave differently to a similar-looking board without them.

The half keel middle ground

Most modern twin fins do not sit at either extreme. A half keel, also called a hybrid, has more base than an upright but less rake than a full keel, and this is the category with the widest range of boards it will work in. Fins like the Futures BMT, the NVS Ono, the Captain Fin Co Christenson honeycomb keel and the Soar Australia G10 half keel were all built around this middle ground, and each was matched in testing to boards ranging from a diamond-tail channel-bottom twin to a future-form deep-concave board with no channels at all.

Can I put a keel fin in a board built for uprights?

You can try it, but expect it to feel different than the shaper intended. Testing showed a keel-style hybrid felt like too much fin on a board with thin rails and aggressive channels, even though the same fin worked well on a heavier board with thicker rails.

Does a bigger rider always need a bigger fin?

Generally yes, but tail width and board weight matter as much as rider weight. A heavier board with thicker rails wants more fin regardless of who is riding it; a lighter, thinner-railed board can feel over-finned on a heavier rider even with a mid-sized keel.

What is the fastest way to work out what my twin fin wants?
