Which single fin is right for you? Seven boards compared

The right single fin depends on the board's outline, rocker and rail shape, not just its length. A flatter, wider board wants more fin further back for control; a narrower, more refined board can carry a smaller fin set further forward. Single fins are 20 of 150 boards in the log, the third biggest config after twin and thruster.
Seven boards, seven fin choices
A 6'10 stringerless replica board, eggy pin tail, roughly 42 liters, runs an 8 inch Christenson fin on a sliding FCS-style box. Moving the fin forward makes the board tighter and twitchier; moving it back gives slower, wider-arc turns for bigger waves. The original fin that came with this board, a flex fin based on a dolphin fin tracing, proved too much fin for the outline; the Christenson fin balanced it better.
A 7'10 speed shape with a rolled entry, double concave and pinched rails, about 21 1/2 x 2 7/8 and around 52 liters, runs a Ryan Lovelace 8.5 inch True Ames fin. A shorter 7'4 version of the same model, at about 98 kilograms and 6'2 for the rider, runs an 8.5 inch Skip Frye fin instead, since the narrower tail on the smaller board needs less fin.
A second 7'10, flatter in front with a more pulled-in nose and tail and thicker rails than the first, runs a George Greenough 9 inch 4-A True Ames template, set right forward in the box since the box itself sits further back on this board. This board was described as smoother in medium to large waves and less agile in small to medium surf than the first 7'10, a direct result of the different bottom contour and rail shape rather than the fin alone.
An 8'9 good-wave board with a glassed-in fin around 9.5 inches, a flat rocker and heavily pinched rails, is kept for six-foot-plus point conditions only; it does not get taken out in small waves.
An 8-foot performance longboard style board, about 21 1/2 x 3 with a rolled entry into double concave and vee, runs an 8.5 inch Christenson fin most of the time, switching to the 9 inch 4-A depending on wave size. Its improved rocker over an earlier version of the same model was credited with widening its wave range from one-foot point breaks to quite large waves.
A 7'6 double-stringer custom with channels and a single into double concave into vee runs an NVS OLA fin, 8.5 inches, made from G10. Built for travel, at roughly 56 liters, it was named among the five fastest boards taken out to the local point.
An 8'2 triple-stringer widowmaker setup (a single fin with side bites rather than a true single) with a double concave bottom, roughly 52 liters at 7'6 x 21 3/4 x 2 7/8, recorded almost 40 km/h and close to 400 meters on a single wave. Every fin position on this board is marked by hand once dialed in, since the shaper pairs board and fin from the outset.
Where fin position on the box matters most
Two of the seven boards use a movable single fin box, where sliding the fin forward or back changes the board's behavior more than switching fin models does. Moving a single fin forward tightens the turning radius and makes the board more responsive in smaller waves; moving it back trades that responsiveness for a wider, more stable arc suited to bigger waves. On a board with the box already set unusually far back, running the fin at the very front edge of the box's travel corrected a dull feel that only appeared when the fin sat further back in the slot.
Questions people ask
Do bigger single fin boards need bigger fins?
Not always. The 8'9 good-wave board runs a fin only slightly larger than several boards a foot or more shorter, because tail width and rail shape decide fin need more than overall length does.
What is a widowmaker setup?
A widowmaker is a single fin with two smaller side-bite fins added, giving some of a single fin's drawn-out, drivey feel with more hold than a pure single. It behaves close enough to a single fin that riders often group it with single fin boards.
Can I move my single fin on a fixed glass-on box?
No. A glassed-in fin cannot be repositioned, which is a real difference from a removable box: two similarly sized boards with a movable fin box can be tuned to feel very different, while a glassed-on fin locks in one setting.
How do I know if my single fin is too far forward or back?
A dull, unresponsive feel that shows up specifically when a fin sits toward the back of its box travel is a sign to try moving it forward; a board that feels twitchy and hard to settle on a rail can be calmed by moving the fin back.
