Surfboard fins explained: configs, cant, foil and area

A fin config is how many fins a board takes and where the boxes sit: single, twin, thruster, quad, or a five-box bonzer setup. Cant is the angle a fin leans out from vertical. Foil is the cross-section shape that decides how water sheds off the fin. Area is the surface size, measured in square inches on the fin's base card.
Fin configs, from the boards I have logged
Across 150 boards logged, current and sold, the fin config breaks down like this:
- Twin: 42-plus boards, the biggest single group in the log
- Thruster: 23 boards
- Single: 20 boards
- Quad: 13 boards
- Five-box (bonzer style): 13 boards
- A handful of widowmaker, twinzer and bonzer variants beyond that
A twin fin has two fins, set further back and wider apart than a thruster's side fins, which gives it a looser, faster feel with less drag. A thruster has three fins in a triangle, the standard all-round setup on most shortboards. A quad has four fins in two pairs, a smaller front pair and a larger rear pair on the traditional layout. A single fin has one fin, usually well forward on the tail, and it is the oldest config, tracing back over a century. A five-box board, often called a bonzer, lets you run it as a single, a twin, a quad or all five depending on which boxes you fill.
Cant: the angle that changes how a fin sits
Cant is the sideways lean built into a fin, measured in degrees. A six and a half degree cant sits a fin out wider than a five degree cant. Wider cant tends to add looseness and pivot; a lower cant sits more upright and holds a straighter line at speed. On a Futures single-tab fin, the cant is built into the fin itself rather than the box, so a five degree Futures fin and a six and a half degree Futures fin from the same range will sit differently in the same board. One practical note from the log: a wide-canted twin fin sits out far enough that it is easy to catch an ankle on the edge when sitting up in the lineup, so it pays to keep your heels clear.
Foil: flat, curved or symmetrical
Foil describes the fin's cross-section. A flat foil has one flat face and one curved face, common on keel-style fins built for drive rather than pivot. A curved or 80/20 foil has more shape worked into it, which tends to make a fin livelier and more responsive, and it also tells you which side of the box the fin goes on, since an 80/20 foil is not symmetrical. A 50/50 foil is symmetrical on both faces, which means the fin can go on either side, and in a matched set that can make it harder to tell left from right until you check how the fins sit together.
Area: the number on the base card
Area is the surface size of the fin in square inches, and it is the single biggest factor in how much drive and hold a fin gives you. In the sets I have measured, uprights sit in the low 20s square inches, half keels run from about 22 to 25 square inches, and a full keel can push past 25. More area generally means more drive and more hold, at the cost of some looseness; less area means less drag and a livelier, more pivot-friendly feel, at the cost of some control in bigger or more powerful waves.
Fin materials in the log
The fin sets in the register are built from a handful of materials, each with a different feel:
- Fiberglass: the standard, strong and easy to sand or reshape if you want to change the profile
- Honeycomb: a lighter construction, usually the lightest option in a given fin range, good for smaller to medium waves
- Volan: a higher grade fiberglass, stronger again, suited to bigger or more powerful waves
- G10: a single sheet of fiberglass, laser cut, thinner and very precise for its stiffness
- Carbon: stiffer again than G10, holds its shape under load, used in some of the newer big-wave and quad designs
- Molded plastic: flexible and cheap, and the one material in the log that did not hold up; it flapped rather than held a line
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a keel fin and an upright fin?
A keel fin has a long, raked-back base and a lot of area low down, built for straight-line drive rather than tight pivot. An upright fin sits more vertical, with less base and more tip, and it turns quicker with less drag. Most fins on the market sit somewhere between the two, usually called a half keel or hybrid.
Does a bigger fin always mean a faster board?
No. More area gives more hold and drive in a straight line, but it also adds drag and can make a board feel stiffer to turn. The fastest results in the log came from matching fin size to the board and the wave, not from going as big as possible.
Why do some fins have a trailer fin behind a twin?
A trailer, or stabilizer, sits behind the main twin fins to add extra hold and control, particularly in performance-oriented twin fins with a narrower tail. It changes the board's behavior enough that some riders do not count a twin-plus-trailer setup as a true twin fin feel.
What is a five-box or bonzer setup?
A five-box board has boxes for a single fin, a twin fin and a quad, so you can change configuration on the same board. It is a small slice of the log, 13 boards, but it is the most flexible fin setup available on a single board.
