Vouch Gun 8'2 review: a triple-ply stringer semi-gun for serious surf

The Vouch Gun is an 8'2 custom quad, a triple-ply stringer semi-gun hand-shaped for genuinely serious surf. Its build was modeled on a larger version of the same shape that had already proven itself surviving a heavy-wave trip without breaking.

What it is and why I bought it

I ordered this Gun from Vouch in November 2020, a PU board with a curved rocker and a rolled vee into vee bottom, running to a pin tail, with a triple-ply stringer for strength. At 21 1/2 inches wide and 58 litres over 8'2, it sits below true gun length and counts as a semi-gun, built specifically for waves the rest of the rack is not meant to handle.

How it surfed

Its best wave came at Granite, at a top speed of 24.3 km/h (about 15.1 mph) over a 212 metre ride. The fin setup has made a real difference to how it rides: it was originally run with a standard high-quality fibreglass Futures setup, which left it slightly stiff and reluctant to turn, more of a get-in-and-go-straight board given its flat-to-vee bottom. Switching to a quad setup with a bigger rear fin than front loosened it up considerably, making it noticeably more playful while still holding the drive and hold a board like this needs. It does not come out often, in keeping with its role as a board only genuine size calls for.

Who it suits and who it does not

This is a board for a confident surfer who paddles out when the swell is properly up and wants the paddle speed, hold and strength a triple-ply stringer semi-gun provides. It is the wrong board for everyday surf; the wave range logged is 5 to 9 ft, ideal at 7 ft, well above what most of the current rack is built for.

What happened to it

It is still in the rack. It cost $1,700 to build, with a replacement cost of $2,300 logged, and carries an asking price of $1,200, though a board built this specifically for size tends to be kept rather than sold.
