The SJS Custom Quad Fish is a 7'6 stock step-up, hand-shaped on the Gold Coast, that surprised on its very first session with how refined and fast it felt underfoot despite carrying less volume than its length suggests.
What it is and why I bought it
I bought this Quad Fish stock in October 2023, a hand-shaped PU board with a curved rocker, pinched rails and a bottom running an early double concave into a double vee, finished with a swallow tail. At 20 5/8 inches wide and 43 litres over 7'6, it was bought online at a price well below what a similarly capable board from a bigger brand would cost, with a pulled-in tail, a pulled-in nose and refined, bevelled rails.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at Granite, at a top speed of 23.7 km/h (about 14.7 mph) over a 174 metre ride, using NVS Peregrine or Kai fins. The first session alone was enough to make an impression: the double concave running the full length of the board makes it want to accelerate and push through the water, feeling noticeably different from other boards of a similar length. Despite being genuinely low in volume for its size, it still paddled well thanks to enough waterline length, and it is a board meant to be pulled out once the waves get good rather than for groveling in the smallest surf.
Who it suits and who it does not
A low-volume, hand-shaped step-up quad like this suits someone who wants a refined, fast-feeling board for good-quality waves and does not need maximum float to paddle well. It is not the board for groveling in small, weak surf, and the logged wave range of 3 to 6 ft, ideal at 5 ft, backs that up directly.
What happened to it
It sold on 9 December 2025 for $550, with fins included, against an $850 purchase cost.
