The Campbell Designed Middle Toe is an 8'8 twin fin built for a longboarder who wants to try something different. It has produced the longest, fastest ride of any board in the current rack.
What it is and why I bought it
I ordered the Middle Toe custom from Campbell Designed in February 2023, an EPS board with Exoflex construction built specifically for someone who already rides a mid-length or a longboard and wants a twin fin version of that experience. At 8'8 and 22 inches wide, it carries plenty of volume, a relaxed entry rocker and a pulled-in vee tail, with the fins set well back from the nose for control.
How it surfed
This board's numbers stand out from everything else in the log. Paddled out on the biggest, fattest waves available at a local point, it produced a 416 metre ride at Granite, its best wave, clocking a top speed of 38.7 km/h (about 24 mph), a speed most shorter boards in the rack never touch. CI Twin Pin fins, also known as BMTs, have been the setup behind that. It has been taken to the Maldives more than once as a travel board, and it copes with good point waves while asking for more care in hollow beach breaks. It has been out relatively rarely so far, simply because opportunities for the long, open-face waves it wants have been limited.
Who it suits and who it does not
Someone already comfortable on a mid-length or longboard who wants a twin fin's speed and turning without giving up paddle power is exactly who this board was built for. It is not the pick for hollow beach breaks, where the length and relaxed rocker work against it, and its ideal range sits at 7 ft within a 1 to 8 ft window, so it wants a proper point wave to show what it can do.
What happened to it
It is still in the rack. It cost $1,700 to build and carries an asking price of $1,000, though there is little reason to move on a board that has produced the fastest, longest ride in the current quiver.
