What it is and why I bought it
I ordered the Mid Mod from Campbell Designed in June 2023, built in EPS with Exoflex construction and a mild flat-to-vee bottom, sized to take on any wave rather than one condition in particular. At 6'9 and 48.5 litres, it is bigger than a shortboard but smaller than a true mid-length, aimed at a rider who wants a bit more volume without giving up performance.
How it surfed
The Mid Mod has proven itself one of the more reliable boards in the current rack. Its best wave came at Honkies, at a top speed of 28.1 km/h (about 17.5 mph) over 179 metres, and NVS Ono fins have been the pairing behind that. Light EPS construction and a shaping background in performance shortboards show up in how quickly it responds: it handles steep takeoffs and turns tightly for a board this size, while the wave range of 1 to 7 ft, ideal at 3 ft, keeps it useful across most ordinary days.
Who it suits and who it does not
An intermediate to advanced surfer who wants extra paddle power and glide without losing the ability to turn hard is the target rider for the Mid Mod. It is a poor match for a beginner who needs a more forgiving, higher-volume board, and it is not built to be pushed hard as a step-up in serious size.
What happened to it
It is still in the rack. It cost $1,360 to build and carries an asking price of $1,000, but it remains one of the more regularly used boards in the quiver.
