Your weight sets the baseline for how much volume keeps you floating and paddling well. This tool turns that weight, plus ability, age and the wave size you surf most, into a liter range, then lists boards from the log whose actual volume falls inside it.

Why a range instead of one number

Two surfers at the same weight can need noticeably different volume. A confident, frequently paddling surfer in their twenties wants less foam under them than someone the same weight who surfs twice a month with some shoulder wear from years on a board. Ability, age and wave size can move the number by ten or more liters at the same body weight. A single number pretending otherwise is just more confident than it should be.

What goes into the range

The starting point is a published-style guideline: liters per kilogram of body weight, set by ability level. Someone still learning to stand up and catch waves unassisted needs more volume relative to their weight than someone comfortable turning off the tail in solid surf, because early paddling and pop-up technique both lean on the board doing more of the work. From there, two adjustments apply. Age moves the range up slightly past 40 and further past 55, on the reasoning that paddle fitness and catch speed both tend to decline with the years even when skill has not, and a little extra volume buys back some of that. Wave size moves it the other way for solid, more critical waves, where less volume under a steeper face gives you more control, and moves it up again for small, weak days where you need every bit of float and glide just to get moving.

Why does age change the volume range at all?

Paddle fitness and catch speed both tend to decline with years on the water even when skill and wave judgment have not, so a little extra volume helps make up ground that used to come from paddling alone.

I surf both small and solid days. Which wave size should I pick?

Pick whichever size you surf most often. If your sessions split evenly, run the tool twice, once for each, and treat the two results as the practical range you are shopping in rather than picking one and ignoring the other.

Why do the matched boards include sold boards, not just current ones?

Because a sold board's dimensions and volume are still real data points about what worked at a given weight and ability, useful for comparison even though that specific board is no longer available.

What if no board in the log matches my range exactly?

The tool widens its search step by step until it finds at least three boards, then shows the ones closest to the middle of your range. If the widened result still looks far from your number, treat that as a sign the log simply does not have many boards built for your specific weight and conditions, not that the range itself is wrong.

Should I trust this over advice from a shaper or shop?

No. Someone who has fitted boards to your weight, ability and local waves in person knows things this tool cannot. Use this as a starting range to bring into that conversation, not a replacement for it.
