Volume in liters is a rough estimate of length times width times thickness, adjusted by a coefficient for how full or narrow the outline runs. This tool does that multiplication for you and returns a number, plus a range either side of it, so you are not treating a single decimal as more certain than it is.
Why the same dimensions do not always mean the same volume
A box shape with the same length, width and thickness as a board would hold more foam than the board itself, since a real outline curves in at the nose and tail and the rails taper toward the deck. How much foam is lost to that curve depends on the outline: a fuller fish or retro shape keeps more volume for its size, a performance shortboard's tighter curves and lower rails give away more, and a longboard or mid length sits somewhere in between depending on the specific nose and tail shape. That is the entire reason this tool asks for a shape class rather than assuming one multiplier fits every board.
How this was calibrated
The coefficient behind each shape class comes from the boards in this log, not a manufacturer's chart. Out of 150 boards on record, 122 carry a clean numeric length, width, thickness and volume together. Of those, 96 have a style description that matches one of the shape families below; the other 26 carry a generic style label like "modern" or "groveller" that does not sort cleanly into a family, so they were left out of the calibration rather than forced into a group they might not fit.
For each board, dividing its recorded volume by length times width times thickness gives an implied coefficient. Grouping those by shape and taking the middle value (the median) of each group gives the constant this tool uses. A shape family with fewer than five boards was too thin a sample to trust on its own, so it was folded into the family with the closest median coefficient instead: longboards, with only 4 boards carrying full dimensions, borrow the fish and wide twin number, since the two medians were nearly identical, and eggs, with only 3, were folded into hybrids.
The error band, in words
No formula this simple nails every board exactly, so alongside the estimate this tool shows a range: the 10th to 90th percentile spread of the coefficient seen across the boards used to calibrate that shape class. In practice that runs from roughly 2 to 4 percent under the estimate to roughly 4 to 6 percent over it, wider for fish and wide twins and narrower for hybrids and eggs. Treat the single number as a best guess and the range as the honest answer.
Reading the result
The number this tool returns is a starting point for comparing boards, not a replacement for a measured volume printed on a stringer or in a listing. Trust a manufacturer's stated volume over this estimate when you have one; use this tool when you only have raw dimensions, from a tape measure or a secondhand listing that skipped the volume line.

Questions people ask
Why does the tool ask for a shape class instead of just length, width and thickness?
Because two boards with identical length, width and thickness can carry noticeably different volume depending on outline and rail shape. Asking for a shape class is how this tool accounts for that without pretending one formula fits every board.
How accurate is the estimate?
Within the stated error band for most boards shaped close to the family you pick, generally a few percent either side of the number shown. A board with an unusual outline for its class, a very domed deck, or heavily domed rails can sit further outside that band.
What if I do not know my board's shape class?
Pick whichever of the five options reads closest to the board in front of you. A generic modern shortboard with rounded rails and moderate curves fits closest under performance shortboard or mid length depending on its length; a fuller, wider board with a rounded outline fits fish or wide twin; anything long, straight-railed with a rounded nose fits longboard.
Can I trust this over a volume printed on the board itself?
No. A printed or manufacturer-stated volume, when you have one, is a direct measurement or a shaper's own calculation for that specific outline. Use this tool when that number is missing, not to override it when it exists.
