A single fin bought expecting an easy, all-purpose travel board turned out to want something specific: real size. This custom 7'6 x 22 x 3, around 56 liters, with a lilac rail and a double stringer, only truly showed what it could do once the waves at a local point break picked up. As at April 2025, here is what makes it fast in exactly those conditions and not much more.

An unusual bottom for a single fin

Most single fins in this rack run a rolled or flat nose. This one starts with a mild single concave close to the nose that deepens by the halfway point, developing into a slight double before running into channels that carry through to the tail. The stringer sits below the rail line for the entire length of the board, which is meant to help draw water through those channels rather than let it spill off the rail early. Only after the fin box does the bottom finally release into a vee, later than most boards of this style. A diamond tail finishes the outline, unusual for a single fin of this shape.

Rocker built for speed, not looseness

A fair amount of nose rocker sits ahead of a notably low tail rocker, a combination that explains most of what this board does well: it is fast, and being a single fin, it still pivots cleanly through a turn once the fin is set in the right spot. Full rails through the mid-section carry the board's volume comfortably at 56 liters.

How it actually rides

In smaller waves, the board feels a little sticky rather than loose, a direct result of that concave nose compared to the rolled or flat noses on most other single fins in the rack. It does not want to be thrown around in small, weak surf. Point it at genuinely big waves, though, and the character changes completely: it gets fast down the line, jetting through sections that would slow a lot of other boards down. A top speed of 31.7 km/h and a longest wave of 228 meters, both logged at a favorite point break, back up how much this board wants size to work with.

The fin that suited it

An 8.5 inch keel-style single fin proved to be the right size, with the note that it did not need to be any bigger or any smaller to feel balanced and fast.

Why it still got sold

Bought as a travel option expecting a versatile, easy-going board, it turned out to be more specific than that: very good in size, less interesting in the small stuff most sessions actually deliver. A 7'10 single fin already in the rack gets reached for instead on most days, which left this board without a clear job once the novelty of testing it wore off. In good condition and barely worn despite several sessions, it suited exactly the kind of trip where a rider wants a strong, fast board for good waves without risking something more fragile, and that is who it was sold to serve next.

What it cost, and what it sold for

Bought new for 1,280 AUD, this board carried a replacement cost of around 1,500 AUD by the time it was listed at 950 AUD. It eventually sold for 700 AUD, a fair return for a board that was ridden only 8 times across its time in the rack, most of that use concentrated in the bigger, faster conditions it was actually built for.
