C-Drive vs S-Wings: which twin fin actually works best?

C-Drives are the dependable choice: put them in almost any twin fin and they work. S-Wings are the faster choice, but only once you match the fin to the exact tail-to-fin-box distance on your board. I rode both back to back over two weeks, four sets of S-Wings and one C-Drive configuration, across five different twin fins, to work out which claim actually holds up.
C-Drives: confidence first, in three dedicated twins
C-Drives have an oversized base that eliminates the slip an upright fin can give up mid-turn, without feeling as drivey as a full keel. I rode them in a Campbell Designed Wingman, a Channel Islands Mid Twin and a Mitch Surman Void with channels, and in every case they behaved like something between an upright and a keel rather than a copy of either.
The Surman Void, at 7'4 with fins set 10 inches apart instead of the usual 11 or more, had previously worked best for me with Alkali Ellis fins. The C-Drives added more drive and hold without costing any turning ability, which matters on this board because a straight keel setup makes it too stiff to turn. At over 100 kilograms, I found the large NVS C-Drives nimble and precise on this board, with no compromise in turning. On the Channel Islands Mid Twin, C-Drives produced a top speed of 29.1 km/h (18.1 mph), matching the fastest session I have logged on that board with any fin.
S-Wings: a system, not just a fin
S-Wings behave completely differently from C-Drives, and the difference comes down to one measurement: the distance from the tail to the fin box. Get that wrong for the fin you are running and the board either slides out or never wakes up.
On the Campbell Designed Wingman, at 9.5 inches from tail to fin box with a single channel, the purple 520 S-Wings held perfectly. On the Campbell Designed Binary twin, at 8.5 inches to the tail box, the same fins felt amazing. But the same 520s in the Jim Banks The Revolution, at 10 3/8 inches, slipped out on a big wave at my local point. That board needed either the keel version of the S-Wing or a board with deeper channels to hold the same fin.
The Channel Islands Mid Twin taught a different lesson. At 11 1/4 inches from tail to fin box, it needed the Red Mid Keel version, not the standard upright S-Wing. Once matched correctly, the slingshot feeling S-Wings are known for is real, and on most of the boards I tested, S-Wings produced a higher top speed than any other fin I have run in that board, with noticeably less resistance while paddling too.
So which one should you buy?
Think of C-Drives as a small block engine: turn the key and you get instant, predictable power in almost any board or fin position. They are trustworthy, and the obvious choice if you are currently running uprights and finding them too slippy in a turn. S-Wings are more like a turbocharger: when the tail-to-fin-box distance matches the fin, they fly, but they demand homework first. Get the measurement wrong and a board that should be fast just slides.
My take after testing both across five boards: go C-Drives if you want one setup that works in any twin fin, any conditions, any fin position. Go S-Wings if you are willing to measure your board's tail-to-fin-box distance and buy the matching version, because the payoff in top speed and reduced paddling resistance is real once it is dialed in. Either way, a regular twin fin fin set may end up as your backup once you have tried both.
