The Surman Sweet Leaf is a 6'6 custom twinzer, a performance-oriented single concave board running four fins rather than the more common twin or thruster setup. It is early in its time in the rack, but the setup alone makes it a distinct board within the current quiver.
What it is and why I bought it
I ordered the Sweet Leaf from Surman in March 2025, a PU board with a medium rocker, full rails and an early single concave running into a deep single with a double. At 21 inches wide and 44 litres over 6'6, it is described in the register as a single concave twinzer built for performance rather than everyday cruising.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at Burgess, at a top speed of 16.1 km/h (about 10 mph) over 52 metres, using an Album twinzer fin setup. There is more to learn about how it performs across a wider range of conditions, but the twinzer setup itself, with its extra pair of trailing fins, is a genuinely different feel from the twin fins that make up most of the rack.
Who it suits and who it does not
A twinzer like this suits someone who already understands twin fins and wants to try the extra drive and control a four-fin setup adds, particularly in the smaller, everyday conditions this board is logged against. It is not the board for someone wanting the loosest, most drawn-out turning of a pure twin fin, since the twinzer's extra fins are there specifically to add hold. The logged wave range is 2 to 5 ft, ideal at 2 ft.
What happened to it
It is still in the rack. It cost $1,500 to build, with a matching replacement cost, and carries an asking price of $850, though it is early enough in its life that there is no sign of it moving on.
