The Quicksilver Bat is a 6'6 soft-top thruster, bought cheap and used exactly as advertised: small-wave fun with nothing to lose sleep over.

What it is and why I bought it

I bought the Bat stock in July 2023, a foam board with a flat rocker, flat rails and a flat bottom running to a swallow tail. At 22 inches wide and 53 litres over 6'6, it is built for stability and ease rather than performance, logged in the register simply as small wave fun.

It came in a pink with checkers colourway.

How it surfed

Its best wave came at a spot called Di, at a top speed of 18 km/h (about 11.2 mph) over 60 metres, using its own Quicksilver fin setup. It is not a board in heavy rotation, but it has done what it was bought to do on the days it has come out. The wave range noted is 1 to 6 ft, ideal at 2 ft.

Who it suits and who it does not

A cheap, flat-bottomed foamie like this suits someone who wants a low-stakes board for small, casual surf, whether that is a beginner or simply a day when a more serious board is not worth the risk. It is not built for anyone chasing performance turning or anything beyond the smallest, softest conditions.

What happened to it

It is still in the rack. It cost $215, a genuinely low price point, with a replacement cost of $449 logged and an asking price of $200 if it were to move on.
