The JS HyFi Monsta Box is a 6'4 EPS thruster all-rounder, one of the most-used boards in the sold register, despite a floaty feel that could get it knocked around in bigger surf.
What it is and why I bought it
I bought the Monsta Box stock in December 2016, an EPS board with a medium rocker and hard rails, running a single-to-double-concave bottom, finished with a rounded square tail in a standard thruster setup. At 20 3/4 inches wide and 38.2 litres over 6'4, HyFi construction made it a light, buoyant board relative to its size.
It came in a white colourway.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at Ninjas, and it earned its keep as a genuine all-rounder, with Jordy-style fins as the setup used. The register is candid about its main trade-off: it is very floaty and gets tossed around easily, a common characteristic of light EPS constructions once conditions get messy or powerful. The logged wave range is 2 to 4 ft, ideal at 2 ft.
Who it suits and who it does not
A light, buoyant EPS all-rounder like this suits someone who wants easy paddling and float in small, everyday surf. It is a weaker match for anyone surfing in choppy or powerful conditions, since the same floatiness that helps paddling can make the board harder to control once the water gets messy.
What happened to it
It sold on 25 September 2017 for $500, against a $950 purchase cost.
