The JS Monstabox is a 6'3 PU performance thruster that rode well across a wide range of conditions but was especially sweet in the smaller, 2 to 3 ft window.
What it is and why I bought it
I bought the Monstabox stock in October 2017, a PU board with a medium rocker and hard rails, running a single-to-double-concave bottom, finished with a rounded square tail in a standard thruster setup. At 20 1/2 inches wide and 37 litres over 6'3, it followed a fairly conventional performance shortboard template.
It came in a white colourway.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at Sultans, at a top speed of 28.1 km/h (about 17.5 mph) over a 148 metre ride, using an Mfanno-style fin. It rode well across most conditions, with the register calling out 2 to 3 ft specifically as where it felt sweetest. The logged wave range is 1 to 5 ft, ideal at 4 ft.
Who it suits and who it does not
A conventional PU performance thruster like this suits someone who wants a reliable, well-rounded shortboard, particularly strong in smaller, everyday surf. It does not stand out as a specialist for any one wave type beyond that small-to-medium sweet spot, so someone chasing a dedicated big-wave or small-wave specialist shape would look elsewhere.
What happened to it
It sold on 16 March 2021 for $600, against an $850 purchase cost. A replacement cost of $900 is also logged against it, for comparison against what it originally cost.
