PU still wins by a wide margin in this log, and for most surfers buying one board, PU remains the safer default. EPS has a place, especially for lighter, higher-performance boards or a genuinely budget-conscious purchase, but it comes with different failure points than PU does.

The numbers

As at May 2026, the full 150-board log runs 97 PU boards against 17 EPS, with the rest split across foam softboards, LFT and a handful of other constructions. The current 29-board rack leans even harder toward PU: the large majority of what is in the quiver today is PU, with only a handful of EPS boards and a couple of foam softboards.

That skew is not really a preference stated once and locked in, it is what happened after riding both over a long period. EPS boards came and went from the rack more than PU boards did. Of the 29 current boards, 23 are PU, four are EPS and two are foam softboards, so even the boards actively chosen to keep lean heavily toward PU, more heavily than the 97 to 17 split across the full 150-board history.

A small number of boards in the log also use other constructions entirely, including a handful built with lighter flex-tech style layups rather than either standard PU or EPS. Where EPS worked

A budget EPS twin fin fish, bought specifically to test whether a low-cost board could actually perform, held up well. Despite the low price, the construction was reasonable quality, with proper glass work and reinforcement in the tail area, and it stood up to repeated sessions across a range of conditions without denting or degrading noticeably more than locally made PU boards in the same rack.

EPS also suits a lighter, more lively feel when that is the goal. A performance-leaning EPS board can carry more volume for its weight than an equivalent PU board, which helps paddle power without adding bulk.

Where EPS did not work

A heavier rider on an EPS fish from a well-known brand had a rougher run: one board from that same construction was eventually written off, and another discolored over time. EPS can be less forgiving of hard use for a heavier surfer than PU, and repairs on EPS generally need different materials and more care than a standard PU ding repair.

Where PU keeps winning

PU remains the more predictable material across the widest range of board styles in this log, from fish through mid-lengths to longboards. It flexes differently underfoot, which many surfers, including the boards that stayed in the rack the longest, simply prefer for feel. It is also more familiar to most local repair shops, which matters once a board picks up its first ding.

Weight and material together

Rider weight changes this calculation too. A heavier rider puts more repeated stress through a board's construction on every pop-up, bottom turn and landing, which is part of why the heavier rider in this log's EPS testing eventually moved away from a well-known EPS brand after damage on more than one board. A lighter rider is less likely to run into the same issue over the same number of sessions. If you are a heavier surfer specifically, weigh that history a bit more heavily when deciding between the two materials, rather than assuming the two options are equally durable for every body weight.

The practical answer

Consider EPS specifically when weight matters more than durability, such as a light, lively performance board or air travel, or when the price gap between EPS and PU options is doing a lot of the deciding for you.
