8 hybrid twin fins tested, with the board each one suits

There is no single hybrid twin fin that works in every board. As at June 2024, here are eight I have ridden enough to trust, each matched to the board it suited best in my own testing, with the numbers that explain why.
BMT (Brit Merrick Twin): the most available option
This Channel Islands branded fin, made by Futures for the Twin Pin, is essentially identical to the earlier Channel Islands-made version if you already own one. It costs about 174 AUD (110 USD), weighs 276 grams as solid glass, carries a 6 1/2 degree cant and 23.58 square inches of surface area. That weight suits a medium to heavy rider, or a lighter rider on a heavier board in small to medium conditions. I run it in my A Mano twin pin, a double stringer board at 6'6 by 21 1/2 by 2 7/8 with no channels, where it delivers strong, driving speed; it produced one of the fastest waves I have caught in the Maldives.
Captain Fin Co Chris Christenson Honeycomb Hybrid Keel: the lightest of the eight
Set slightly forward of the tab for extra pivot, this honeycomb keel weighs only 204 grams, the lightest fin here, with a 5 degree cant (more upright than most of the others) and 24.18 square inches of area. It costs about 140 AUD (92 USD). I pair it with a Mitch Surman Dark Void channel bottom egg at 6'6, where the wide gap between the fins and the thin tail give plenty of feedback; this combination is fast, responsive and easy to surf.
Captain Fin Co Mikey February: the largest fin here
At 25.99 square inches this is the biggest fin of the set, a heavy solid fiberglass build at 309 grams, bordering on a full keel without quite reaching it. It also runs a 5 degree cant, suiting a wider tail, a heavier board or a heavier rider. In Australia it was on sale at 119 AUD (52 USD) at time of filming, well below its usual price. I run it in an 8'2 Album Moonstone with channels, a longboard-length twin that does not need a full keel because the channels already provide hold; with this fin I clocked 42 km/h (26.1 mph) on that board.
NVS Apex Series Ono Keel: the most versatile
Made from G10 fiberglass, this fin has a smaller surface area than most of the others, which lowers friction in good waves and gives control without adding unwanted speed. It costs about 135 AUD (90 USD), weighs 260 grams, and carries a 6 1/2 degree cant, suiting a small to medium rider, or a larger rider on bigger days. I pair it with a Campbell Designed Mid Mod at 6'9 by 21 by 3 in EPS, a high-performance mid-length, and it was a standout combination on a Maldives trip.
A Mano Surf Performance Keel: for the average-sized rider
Handmade in Australia, this smaller fin costs about 179 AUD (119 USD), weighs 265 grams and covers roughly 22 square inches, designed for pin tail twin fins. At 96 kilograms and 6'2, I run larger fins than most people need, so this is the one I recommend to an average-sized rider who suspects their board needs a little more fin than a plain upright. I pair it with an Eagle Sword NKA, a channel-bottom board with thin rails, where the smaller surface area complements the board's refinement.
Shapers Album MK: a versatile mid-sized option
At 22.39 square inches and 267 grams, this glass fin is shorter and lighter in profile than some others here, at about 170 AUD (113 USD). I have tried it across several Album boards, including the Sunstone, Moonstone, Plasmic and Lightbender. In a 6'4 Album Lightbender, with a fairly pulled-in swallowtail, it sits between an upright and a keel, on a board that itself sits between a retro and a performance shape, which makes it a strong fit for most conditions on that board.
Jim Banks Hooker: for an aggressive Future Form bottom
With a long base for keel-like control but a skinny, flexible top for upright-style movement, and only 21.5 square inches of area, this fin is built to tame a board with heavy concaves that would otherwise spin out a regular fin or an S-Wing. I run it in a Jim Banks Revolution twin pin with no channels and a deep double concave and vee bottom; the long base copes with the volume of water coming off the tail, and the board is fast while still turning well.
Soar Australia G10: the one I would take if I could only take one
Handmade in G10 fiberglass, available in a natural finish or black, this is the most expensive fin in the set at about 230 AUD, and the heaviest at 311 grams with a flat foil and a 6 1/2 degree cant. It has the broadest range of any fin here: I run it in a Campbell Designed Binary Twin, an EPS diamond tail twin with a small channel, at a local hollow, sandy beach break, and it also tamed the same Jim Banks Revolution that otherwise wants the Hooker. If I had to travel with one set of fins for every board behind me, this is the set.
