Yugen VF (Very Fast) 6'2 review: fast and easy, then replaced

This Yugen VF, short for Very Fast, was the first of two 6'2 versions of the same model owned, a five-slot twin fin praised as fast and easy before a second version with more nose flip took over its job.

What it is and why I bought it

I bought this VF stock in April 2018, a PU board with a medium rocker and hard rails, running a single-double vee bottom, finished with a rounded pin tail and five fin slots, in a red-orange colourway. At 20 1/2 inches wide and 37 litres over 6'2, it was built as a fast, easy-to-ride all-rounder.

How it surfed

Its best wave came at Freshy, at a top speed of 26.8 km/h (about 16.7 mph) over a 135 metre ride, with Firewire, Channel Islands 2+1 or similar fins named as options that worked. It confirmed the register's own description directly: works in anything, fast and easy. It was eventually replaced by a second version of the same VF model with more nose flip built in, which took over the role in the rack. The logged wave range is 2 to 5 ft, ideal at 4 ft.

Who it suits and who it does not

A fast, easy five-slot twin fin like this suits someone who wants a genuinely versatile, low-fuss board for everyday small-to-medium surf. It is a less obvious pick for someone who has since found they prefer a touch more nose flip for paddling into steeper takeoffs, which is exactly the refinement the second version added.

What happened to it

It sold on April 13 (year not recorded in the register) for $300, against a $550 purchase cost.
