Yugen VF (Very Fast) 6'2, second version, review: stability from more nose flip

This second Yugen VF, also 6'2 and also short for Very Fast, was built with more nose flip than the first version of the same model, and it went on to log almost double the sessions of its predecessor.

What it is and why I bought it

I bought this second VF stock in August 2019, an EPS board with a medium rocker and hard rails, running a single-double vee bottom, finished with a rounded pin tail and five fin slots, in a blue colourway. At 20 1/2 inches wide and 37.5 litres over 6'2, it was built specifically with more nose flip than the earlier red-orange version of the same model, aimed at improving how it caught steeper waves.

How it surfed

Its best wave came at Ninjas, at a top speed of 28.6 km/h (about 17.8 mph) over a 122 metre ride, using an Alkali Magic Twin fin. It saw significantly more use than the first version, confirming the extra nose flip paid off, described in the register as fast and stable in anything from 1 to 5 ft. The logged wave range matches that description closely, sitting at 2 to 5 ft, ideal at 4 ft.

Who it suits and who it does not

A fast, stable five-slot twin fin like this suits someone who wants an easy, versatile everyday board with slightly better paddling into steeper takeoffs than a flatter-nosed equivalent. It is not a specialist shape for any one wave type; its strength is the same all-round versatility as the board it replaced, refined further.

It sold on 3 May 2021 for $330, against a $750 purchase cost.
