The SMTH Shapes Humanoid is a 6'6 custom quad, built to be ridden in hollow beach breaks and barrels across a genuinely wide range of sizes, from small to overhead.
What it is and why I bought it
I ordered the Humanoid from SMTH Shapes in September 2021, a PU board with a medium rocker and full rails, running a single-to-double-vee bottom, finished with a rounded pin tail in a quad configuration. At 21 1/2 inches wide and 45.8 litres over 6'6, it was built specifically with hollow, barrelling waves in mind.
It came in a red colourway.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at First Point, at a top speed of 35.9 km/h (about 22.3 mph) over a 340 metre ride, using a Christenson CC keel fin, among the faster and longer results logged on any sold board in the register. It held up well in genuinely hollow, powerful conditions, doing the specific job it was ordered for across everything from small to overhead surf. The logged wave range is 1 to 7 ft, ideal at 4 ft.
Who it suits and who it does not
A quad-fin performance board built for hollow surf like this suits someone who regularly surfs barrelling beach breaks and wants a board with the speed and hold to match. It is a less obvious pick for someone who mostly surfs soft, mellow points, since its whole design leans toward power and hollowness rather than a relaxed, drawn-out ride.
What happened to it
It sold on 9 April 2023 for $720, matching its logged asking price, against a $915 build cost. A replacement cost of $1,115 is also logged against it, for comparison against what it originally cost.
