The Gato Heroi Mini Killer is a 7'0 retro single fin, a diamond-tail board whose belly-heavy bottom shape made it a genuinely tricky board to ride well.
What it is and why I bought it
I bought the Mini Killer stock in March 2014, a PU board with a straight rocker, 50/50 rails and a bottom rolled to flat, finished with a diamond tail, running a single fin. At 22 inches wide and 48 litres over 7'0, it followed a retro template distinct from the more modern shapes elsewhere in the register.
It came in an apricot colourway.
How it surfed
Its best wave came at North Steyne, and the register is direct about the challenge it presented: the belly in the bottom shape makes it hard to ride, a trait that separates a genuine retro single fin from a more forgiving modern equivalent. The logged wave range is 2 to 6 ft, ideal at 3.5 ft.
