The Album Plasmic is a 6'2 custom groveller, a diamond-tailed twin fin built for small, fat waves that turns out to hold up in good surf too. It has quietly done enough in the rack to help retire another board entirely.

What it is and why I bought it

I ordered the Plasmic from Album in April 2023 as a small-wave blaster: a flat rocker, a single deep vee channel and a diamond tail on a 22 inch wide, 47 litre platform. The brief was simple, something to grab when the surf is soft and short, not a board that needed good conditions to come alive.

How it surfed

The Plasmic has done exactly what it was built for and then some. Its best wave came at Sunrise, at a 22.5 km/h (about 14 mph) top speed over a 96 metre ride, a solid result for a board this short and this small-wave focused. Album mod keels and Soar G10 fins have both worked in it. Beyond its own numbers, the Plasmic played a real part in a wider rack decision: when a wider, EPS Firewire Seaside felt awkward every time it came off the rack, the Plasmic, doing the small-wave groveller job better, was one of two boards that helped make that Firewire redundant. It surprises in good waves too, riding better than a small-wave board is expected to.

Who it suits and who it does not

At 1 to 4 ft, ideal at 2 ft, this is a board for soft, short, everyday surf rather than anything with real size or push. Anyone who wants one board that covers the smallest days without feeling like a compromise is the target rider here. It is not the board for medium to large waves; for that, something with more length and rocker in the same rack, like the Album Lucent, is a better call.

What happened to it

It is still in the rack. It cost $1,400 to build and carries an asking price of $1,000, though there is no sign of it moving on given the job it is doing.
